The Lazy Seal Cottages is 10km southwest of Westport at Cape Foulwind. It is only a few minutes' walk to the local beach and the beginning of the Seal Colony Walkway and lighthouse area, 5km from Tauranga Bay and the seal colony, 5 minutes from the airport and golf course, 40km north of Punakaiki and Paparoa National Park, and around 90 minutes from Karamea.
The cottages are a relaxed base for beach walks, surfing, fishing, cycling the Kawatiri Coastal Trail, visiting the Seal Colony Walkway, exploring Westport history and planning day trips to Punakaiki, Charleston, Karamea, the Old Ghost Road and Oparara Limestone Caves.
Cape Foulwind/Westport offers up many stunning beaches for a variety of fun.
Explore the beaches below the cliffs at Cape Foulwind, this is my personal fave.
Go Surfing at Tauranga Bay, Nine Miles, or the Westport North Beach (tip head).

Fishing off the beach is better north of Westport along the beach off Fairdown Straight, or off the rock walls in the Buller River mouth.
Take a long walk along Carters Beach.
Enjoy the Nile River along Beach Road and Constant Bay in Charleston.
For a little adventure, try Underworld Rafting & Caving at Underworld Adventures. Take a Unimog ride with Outwest Tours to Charleston or up to the mines. Bring your bike and enjoy the Kawatiri Coastal Trail and many other easy bike tracks or attempt the beginning of the Old Ghost Road. Take a Surf Lesson/hire with Surf Fevah. Take in a round of Golf. Hire a Paddleboard from Basils Hostels and take in the beautiful Buller River. Enjoy a nice walk over the Seal Colony Walkway. Enjoy a massage and after all of that you can kick back at The Star Tavern 100m down the road.
There is so much local history on our doorstep. Stop in at the Coal Town Museum. Take a drive north of Westport and explore the Denniston Plateau, go further and checkout Millerton, both are old Coal Mining towns with great stories to tell. Continue north to Ngakawau, Hector, Mokihinui, Seddonville and even further north to Karamea and The Oparara Limestone Arches.
Heading South of Westport checkout Charleston (was going to be the capital of New Zealand) and discover the history of its Gold Mining days.
